Bigamy in Memphis, Tennessee Is Still a Crime
Memphis divorce lawyer Miles Mason, Sr. was interviewed Feb, 22, 2012, by Jason Miles, WMC-TV Action News 5 about a man with two wives. See video of story here.
From the Man with two wives arrested after missing court date story on WMCtv.com web site:
As far as I know, in all states, it’s a crime to be married to two people at the same time,” said Memphis family law attorney Miles Mason, Sr. Mason said he finds it difficult to believe someone would not know better, even in the midst of a divorce. “Until a divorce is final, it’s not final,” said Mason.
While bigamy is still a crime in Tennessee, apparantly there are still many who refuse to get a divorce before marrying again. There are many aspects of law that provide for marriage so that the act of marriage has important legal effect such as inheritance, health insurance, and taxes. Marriage, and divorce, should not be taken lightly.
