Women are paying alimony to their former spouses more frequently today than ever before. Memphis divorce attorneys for women have been seeing this shift in alimony over the past few years, and statistics on women’s earnings explain why.
Upward Trend in Women’s Earnings
For more than 30 years, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported an upward climb in women’s earnings. In 1979, earnings data showed women brought home 62 percent of the median weekly income of men in a similar job capacity. As of 2010, women have gained nearly 20 percentage points, with take-home pay equaling 81 percent of men’s weekly wages.
This national trend is being reflected in the number of women who pay alimony to their former spouses. The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers report 47 percent of divorce lawyers across the country have seen an increase in the number of women paying alimony.
