Collierville, Tennessee child custody attorneys understand the importance of child custody during a divorce. One of the ways that it can be determined is through an independent child custody evaluation. This is a process in which a neutral third party will, as is always the case, consider the best interests of the child.
The following are some of the factors that will be looked at in an independent child custody evaluation:
- parenting styles and skills;
- each parent’s financial stability;
- relationship between the child and each parent;
- child’s educational needs and how they will be met;
- any history of child neglect or abuse;
- cultural and/or religious issues;
- child’s preferences;
- parent’s work schedule; and
- relationship between the parents.
This investigation will look at everything related to family dynamics and the child’s development. Review yourself what may be covered and what might be asked during the investigation. Prepare yourself by speaking with your attorney, who should be familiar with these cases and the criteria used when determining custody and visitation.
Once it has been completed, the evaluator will submit a report of his or her findings. Not only could the report include recommendations for custody and visitation, but it may also include suggestions for parenting classes or a parenting plan. The report will be reviewed by the judge assigned to the case, and it could play a significant role in his or her decision concerning visitation and custody.
