James J. Webb, Jr.
Friend, colleague, and Memphis lawyer James J. “Jim” Webb, Jr., died on Tuesday, November 10, 2020.
In the years leading to his career in law, Webb attended Louisiana State University where he received his bachelor’s degree (1979) and master’s degree in English (1981). He was on the Dean’s List and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi.
Webb earned his law degree in 1995 from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis where he was a 1993-1994 Humphreys Fellow, as well as Notes Editor for the Law Review. He was named a Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Webb was Freshman Moot Court Quarter-Finalist, Advanced Moot Court Champion, Mock Trial Competition’s Best Brief, International Law Moot Court Competition Midwest Regional’s Fourth-Place Team, and Second-Place Brief. He received the American Jurisprudence Award for Decedent’s Estates, Moot Court, and Trial Advocacy.
Webb was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 1996. From 1995-1997, he was Law Clerk to Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Holly Kirby while she was with the Court of Appeals of Tennessee.
After his clerkship, Webb practiced law with Crone & Mason, PLC, from 1997 to 2010 and then with the Miles Mason Family Law Group, PLC, where he was senior associate attorney at the time of his passing.
Web was among the best and brightest. Attorney Alan G. Crone remembers Webb as “one of the brightest, finest lawyers I have ever known. He cared deeply about the law and his clients.” Attorney James R. Becker, Jr., agreed, “Jim Webb was one of the best people I have known. If you ever needed anything, he was there for you. But perhaps his most impressive trait was his knowledge of all things science fiction and film. It was truly breathtaking. He was a good friend and a good lawyer.”
Donations in his honor may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
