Cheyenne Staten was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. She graduated from Bolton High School with an International Baccalaureate Diploma before going to Union University, where she majored in Spanish and Special Education, graduated Summa Cum Laude, and studied abroad in Costa Rica. It was also at Union University that she met her wife, Petra.
After undergrad, Cheyenne went on to earn an M.Ed. in Advanced Teaching and an M.S. in Psychology with a concentration in Child & Adolescent Development. Cheyenne also taught special education for four years before starting law school. During her second year teaching, she was appointed to Special Education Department Chair of her school. Working alongside attorneys and advocates to monitor compliance and problem-solve is where her interest in law began.
Cheyenne is currently enrolled at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis. There, she works as a Research Assistant to Professor Ralph Brashier and as a staff member of Volume 55 of the University of Memphis Law Review. She recently earned a CALI Excellence for the Future Award for Evidence and will serve on the Editorial Board as a Notes Editor for Volume 56 of the University of Memphis Law Review.
When she is not working or studying, Cheyenne enjoys volunteering and spending time with family. She also has an unusual fixation on Taylor Swift music. Cheyenne has volunteered at the Children’s Museum of Memphis, served as a Youth Villages Mentor, was the first Community Partner of the Harwood Center’s new Community Partner Program, and serves as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Memphis and Shelby County Juvenile Court. Cheyenne was recently nominated for Tennessee Bar Association-Young Lawyers Division, CASA Volunteer of the Year for 2025. Cheyenne’s family enjoys watching soccer, hosting bonfire parties and doing escape rooms, of which they have beaten dozens across the country.
