How do you know if you should get divorced? This depends on your particular circumstances, of course, because no two situations are alike. However, there are things you might want to consider seriously when making this decision, such as whether your problems are irreversible big ones or fixable small ones.
Deciding When to Divorce: Is the problem too big?
While every marriage has its problems, some are too big to work through. Issues such as drug addiction, alcoholism and abuse are examples of big problems that are not tolerable and can be difficult or impossible to work through. Not only that, these issues – especially domestic abuse – can jeopardize your safety and well-being. Adultery is another problem that may be too big for some couples to overcome.
The key is to realize that big problems like this may not go away. Sure, counseling can help sometimes. But even afterwards, will you be comfortable with what it has done to you and your marriage?
Can you work through it?
While some issues may present impassable roadblocks for your marriage, others may be fixable. Counseling may help some couples, while others may be able to work through issues themselves once they identify the problem and commit to fixing it.
But even some less serious issues may be too much for some marriages. Are you simply frustrated with and tired of the direction things are going in your marriage? If you have sought help for the problems in your marriage, but nothing seems to be working, it might be time to cut ties.
Part of knowing when you should divorce is deciding whether to file before your husband. This may help better prepare you for the process.
